Ice Fishing on the Allegheny
Ice fishing is a devotion. Some people are surprised you can do it in Pittsburgh. I joined devotees at a secret spot on the frozen Allegheny River, just north of the city, to find out what drives them to get up before dawn and shiver all day to pursue the perfect catch. This feature for The Allegheny Front won a Golden Quill Award from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.

A Book You Can Taste
The best part of hosting The Allegheny Front is interviewing writers, scientists, activists and kids. Journalist and author Simran Sethi wrote a book I would have read for pleasure, if it hadn't been an assignment. It's called Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love. I do love chocolate. And coffee. I thought I knew all about fair trade, and the origins of my favorite foods. Sethi's book proved me wrong. It is so rich in detail and reflection. Also her enthusiasm for cacao pods is...well, just listen.
